Milk production in the United States during the July - September quarter
totaled 52.6 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from the same three months last
year.
California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.17
billion pounds, despite being one of just seven states with lower annual
output. Kansas had the greatest increase in year-to-year production as that
state produced 268 million pounds of milk in September, up 6.3 percent from the
same month last year.
The average number of milk cows in the United States during the quarter was
9.34 million head, 9,000 head more than the April - June quarter, and 21,000
head more than the same period last year.
