MOUNT SAVAGE -- The Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Department and volunteers from the Allegany County Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security 's collapse team responded to a barn collapse on Bald Knob Road in Mount Savage.
The barn belonged to a local dairy farmer and housed an unknown number of dairy cattle, but collapse team volunteer Sam Wilson said no one, human or animal, was hurt.
The incident "had a number of cattle trapped within the barn," Wilson said. "I was first on the scene for the collapse team."
Firefighters were getting the last cow "as I got there," he said.
"As far as I know, none of the animals were hurt" and neither were any property owners or volunteers. The cows were understandably "spooked very badly," Wilson said.
"One cow .. had a weird look on its face, like, 'get me the heck out of here,'" Wilson said. "It was buggy-eyed. It wasn't real happy to be where it was. It was pretty traumatic. They don't like change. Today, they had major change."
Wilson said he was unsure if the property owners, Ed and Rhonda Crossland, had insurance to cover the loss.
A call to the Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Department chief was not immediately returned. Wilson said the collapse team, a unit of the county's special operations team within the Emergency Management Division, responds to an average of three to four calls a year.
"Basically, what we do, if somebody's trapped in the building, we have the tools and the knowledge to go in and get them out safely," Wilson said. "We have the same basic training that the (U.S.) task force that went down to Haiti has taken."
One of the more recent incidents occurred last August when a motorist drove his vehicle into Kline's Gifts and Pawn on North Mechanic Street in Cumberland. Collapse team specialsts "shored up the front end" and stabilized the building.
In September 2007, team members responded to a building collapse at 118 W. Oldtown Road in South Cumberland. An apartment building, since torn down, had fallen.
