As dry as we are in the western Utah desert open housing works well for us. The cows prefer having more dirt to walk on. The only downside is that when we have the rare moisture it can be difficult to keep cows clean.

We've been freestalls since the early 60's; there really isn't any other practical way, unless you could pasture year round.
