I sell 150-200 head per year all privately. Elite genomice heifers are sold indidvidually and replacement females sold by trailer/pot load. Depending on what brings the best return, I have sold young heifers, short breds, springers, fresh or dry. Never worried about paying the feed bill since my milk check is big enough to do that.

There isn't a 'perfect' answer for this question. What are the goals? I've done all of them. At the correct time every one is the best answer. Sometimes it's what gets the feed bill paid the quickest.

I never send an animal to a consignment sale, too many expenses. Everything (about 30 head per year) are sold privately and many to repeat buyers.

We sell a good many cattle for a small herd. We sell almost everything privately
